York Minster's Great East Window restoration

The team assembled by the York Glaziers Trust is assessing the window, preparing for its removal, cleaning, restorationand re-installation. Twelve panels have been removed to examine the task.The 15th-century Great East Window is said to be the largest pane of stained glass in northern Europe, frequently compared to the size of a tennis court, and more than 1700 square feet. It tells the story of Creation.
Before the Norman Conquest, the Archdiocese of York claimed pre-eminent sovereignty over Canterbury, London and the other English sees. During the iconoclastic destruction of Henry VIII and the later Civil War (thanks largely to Yorkshire's Sir Thomas Fairfax), the Minster fortunately was protected.
John Thornton, of Coventry, painted the window. He was responsible for the glass in Coventry Cathedral as well.
'The subjects are divided between the Old Testament from the creation of the world to the death of David's son Absalom (Kings 18:9-15). The other segments contain the Book of Revelations (Apocalypse), portraying the end of the world. The lowest row shows kings and bishops, with the donor Bishop Skirlaw of Durham in the center. There have been several fires at the Minster over the 500 years since its completion: Minster History: To the Present Day, the most recent being the 1984 destruction of the south transept roof, in which the Rose Window was only saved from a catastrophic collapse by its having been re-leaded in 1972.
