September 20, St Eustace and Companions, Martyrs
Today St Eustace and his companions, second century Roman martyrs. From breviary.net, here are Lessons iv v and vi for these saints, and some images of the church in Rome dedicated to Sant Eustachio. Originally, St Eustace was commemorated just before All Saints Day, but in the 8th century, the feast was moved to September 20. (See the entry for St Eustace in The Golden Legend.)

Lukas Paumgartner, one of the donors, appears as the Saint. He is a Christian knight, guard and protector of the holy shrine, the Nativity of Christ in the central panel where he appears once more as part of the group of the donating family. This is the earliest occasion on which an artist is known to have used the facial features of a donor in depicting a saint. In 1988 this painting was seriously damaged by a vandal, and it is undergoing restoration.

They tried him in vain with divers cajoleries to make him deny Christ, but could not, and he and his wife and little ones were thrown to the lions.
